Baring My Soul: What Role Will I Play?

Baring My Soul is a category of writing where I share a personal piece of my life’s journey in an effort to do my part in maintaining connection because when we share our stories, we let someone know that they are not alone.

My intention was to write about balance and prioritizing for today but the unrest or dare I say the revolutions taking place in America right now are too important not to address. Collectively black people in this country have experienced so much trauma, pain, brutality, discrimination, and injustice since its founding. There have been moments and turning points throughout history that have seemingly provided strides towards our freedom, but we have not reached total freedom. Truthfully, in this moment, I don’t know how to describe what total freedom looks like, but I do know that it cannot be reached without dismantling systemic racism and dismantling the hateful and toxic beliefs and values of anyone who (consciously, subconsciously, or unconsciously) participates or practices oppression of black men, women, girls, or boys. History continues to show us that while systemic racism and racial inequality exists in any form there will always be a fight for freedom. I realize that I have to look in the mirror and ask myself, “What role do I need to play in the fight against systemic racism and racial inequality?” Make sure you ask yourself that question too.

Remember:

Leaders are necessary .

Foot soldiers are necessary.

Organizers are necessary .

Financers are necessary.

Creatives are necessary.

Raw conversation is necessary.

Awareness is necessary.

Action is necessary.

Much love.
